Bluetooth

Bluetooth is a wireless LAN technology designed to connect devices of different functions such as telephones, notebooks, computers, cameras, printers, coffee makers, and so on, in a small area such as a room.

Bluetooth is an implementation protocol defined by the IEEE 802.15 standard. The standard defines a wireless Personal Area Network (PAN) operable in a small area. The bluetooth standard specifies wireless operation in the 2.45 GHz radio band and supports data rates upto 720 kbps. A complete Bluetooth system requires following elements:
  • An RF position for receiving and transmitting data
  • A module with a baseband microprocessor
  • Memory
  • An interface to the host device (such as a mobile phone)

Well thanks for such jazzy comments!
As far as the name BLUETOOTH is concerned, it has got this name from a king.
He was a late tenth century king, Harald Gormsson, viking king of Denmark and Norway. He was nicknamed "Blatand" which translates into Bluetooth. There are different reasons for his nickname:
One is that he was so fond of blueberries that his teeth were stained blue.
Another is that it was believed he had a tooth and gum disease which caused the discoloration of his teeth.
And just one more reason is the blue colour of his crown he used to wear frequently.

His name was chosen because the king was most known for his unification of two warring tribes from Denmark and Norway. So, just as King Bluetooth connected these two previously warring tribes so does the Bluetooth technology with two electronic devices.

Ow couldn't think that Bluetooth could have a link to history. Hats off to the one who derived such a fantastic word for this technology.
